A buyer once held two pieces of black wetsuit material and asked a simple question:
“They are both 3mm. Why does one feel much softer, and why is the price so different?”
It is a common question, especially for brands developing their first wetsuit.
The answer is that thickness is only one part of a wetsuit specification. Two materials labeled “3mm” can differ significantly in flexibility, feel, construction and cost.
A Wetsuit Starts With the Material
Wetsuits are commonly made from foam-based materials laminated with textile fabrics.
The material needs to balance several factors, including thermal insulation, flexibility, comfort, durability and cost.
This is why simply asking a factory for “a 3mm wetsuit” is usually not enough information for an OEM project.
The manufacturer also needs to understand how and where the product will be used.
What Are CR, SCR and SBR?
These terms frequently appear when sourcing wetsuits and other neoprene products.
CR generally refers to chloroprene rubber, while SBR refers to styrene-butadiene rubber. SCR is commonly used in the industry to describe material systems combining characteristics of CR and SBR.
Different material formulations can provide different levels of softness, stretch, recovery, durability and cost.
This helps explain why two wetsuits of the same nominal thickness may feel very different when worn.
Is the Most Expensive Material Always Better?
Not necessarily.
Material should match the positioning of the final product.
An entry-level water sports product may require a careful balance between performance and cost.
A product designed for users who place greater importance on flexibility and comfort may require a different material solution.
Before selecting the material, it is useful to answer several questions:
Who will wear the wetsuit?
What activity is it designed for?
What conditions will it be used in?
What is the target retail price?
Which matters most for this product: flexibility, thermal performance, durability or cost?
Why Can Two SCR Materials Feel Different?
Material labels do not tell the whole story.
Different formulations, foam structures, laminated fabrics and suppliers can influence the characteristics of the finished sheet.
For this reason, buyers should not assume that every material described as “SCR” will perform exactly the same.
For serious product development, physical material samples and finished prototype testing are more useful than relying only on a specification sheet.
Material Is Only the Beginning
A good material does not automatically make a good wetsuit.
Pattern development, cutting accuracy, seam construction, stitching, zipper installation and quality control all influence the final product.
